Nepal – A potential country for specialty coffee production

This country does not have a long history of growing coffee like Ethiopia or Colombia. Coffee has only been grown on a commercial scale since the mid-1990s, but its growth rate is astounding. Nepalese specialty coffee journey

Nepal specializes in the production of high quality Arabica coffee. They are grown in the highlands of the mountain ranges that stretch across the country. Tracing history, coffee did not originate in Nepal. Nepal’s coffee journey began in 1938, when the nomadic hermit Hira Giri brought coffee beans from Burma to plant in Aapchaur – a small village in Gulmi District. Commercial-scale specialty coffee production in Nepal

With that said, it was not until the mid-1980s that Nepalese farmers started growing coffee on a commercial scale. Between 1983 and 1984, Nepal Coffee Company (NeCCo) was established in Manigram in Rupandehi district. Local farmers work together to process and dry their coffee for export, helping to increase production.

Then, during the 1990s and early 2000s, more and more farmers started growing coffee. The Ministry of Agriculture of Nepal has launched the Coffee Development Program, providing technical and financial support to local producers.

Today, according to statistics of the International Coffee Organization, there are more than 32,500 households in a total of 42 districts in the country involved in coffee production. In which, Kavrepalanchok District in eastern Nepal is the largest coffee producing region in the country. The coffee growing area in this area spans 273 hectares and produces more than 32 tons of coffee. The second largest coffee growing district is Gulmi district in western Nepal, which covers an area of 231 hectares and produces 27 tons of coffee.
