Coffee lots auctioned at Colombia’s 8th Land of Diversity break price records

Land of Diversity Auction

 

The Land of Diversity Auction is a National Coffee Quality Competition dedicated to Colombian coffee farmers and producers. Land of Diversity is organized and operated by the Federation of Coffee Growers of Colombia (FNC). The objective of the contest is to find and reward the efforts, dedication and commitment of Colombian coffee growers in producing high quality coffee. Besides, the contest also honors the diversity of coffee, Colombian growing regions as well as creates a new marketing channel for Colombian coffee in the international market. This is also an opportunity for coffee lovers to discover the diverse and unique flavors of Colombian coffee, from traditional coffees to specialty coffees.

The 8th Land of Diversity coffee batches break the price record

 

Evaluation process

 

This year, the 8th annual Land of Diversity Auction took place, attracting the participation of large and small producers across Colombia with 750 lots of fine coffee submitted to the competition. These coffees go through three rounds of tasting process based on five attributes including Acidity, Balance, Body, Mildness, Softness.

Round 1: First, the coffee beans are cupped by a team of expert tastings from Almacafe. After cupping, the expert team will evaluate and score according to the SCA scale and select the coffee batches with 86 points or higher. Out of 750 coffee batches participating this year, 214 excellent batches passed the milestone to enter the next round.

Round 2:   In this round of tasting, 214 coffee lots continue to be separated to choose the best ones. They are reviewed and scored by experienced cupping experts from Almacafe and FNC to select the best coffee beans.

Round 3: The third round was held in Bucaramanga, Santander. The coffee beans will be tasted by all international judges, guests, and the organizing committee to select the best batch and auction.

Results of the 8th Land of Diversity Auction

 

According to the Land of Diversity organizers, 67 buyers participated in the auction that took place last week in Bucamaranga, Santander. All 750 batches of coffee sent are bought and paid to the producer at a high price as a recognition of the quality and effort of the producer.

In particular, there were 27 coffee lots in Santander, Cauca, Huila, Antioquia Norte de Santande regions that reached the 8th annual Land of Diversity final round and achieved a super price. In which, the average price for coffee lots is 22.77 USD/pound. The highest batch of coffee up to 120.50 USD / pound equivalent to more than 2.8 million VND for 453.5gr, is the Gesha variety from US-based roaster Koffee Kult (Broward County, Florida). This price broke the record ever held by the Land of Diversity competition for many years. This is an amazing achievement for Colombian farmers and coffee industry. This stellar result proves that growing Colombian coffee promises a bright future for the industry as a whole while providing better income and prosperity to the farmers who grow them.
