Project overview of A New World History & Geography of Arabica Coffee Cultivars
With the desire to explore and visualize the world of Arabica coffee, specialty coffee import company Royal Coffee has planned a project on A New World History & Geography of Arabica Coffee Cultivars. This is a green bean specialty coffee import company established in 1978. Over nearly half a century, Royal Coffee has expanded with an international network of production partners. At the same time, the company employs a team of experienced experts to deliver innovative workshops, SCA Roadmaps, CQI courses, and training programs across various coffee-related areas.
The study was led by Chris Kornman – director of education at The Crown Royal Coffee’s Lab & Tasting Room in Oakland. He said information was collected by Royal Coffee’s team of experts from specialized document banks around the world from 1911 until now such as the Specialty Coffee Association, AOAC International, World Coffee Research, Scientific Reports,… They tried to identify and verify unverified stories related to the growth, mutation, selection, and distribution of popular Arabica varieties. In addition, Royal has collaborated with graphic design company Infonewt to transfer data through images completely and intuitively for users.

Results of research on the history and geography of the new world of Arabica coffee varieties
In November 2023, Royal Coffee officially announced the results of The New World History & Geography of Arabica Coffee Cultivars. The full version includes 2 posters and a book about the hundreds of years of coffee-growing history from the forests of Ethiopia to the present day. There are facts about the origin of Arabica that you may not have known. For example, Arabica may be a hybrid of Coffea canephora (Robusta) and a low-yielding, low-caffeine coffee called Eugenioides. The first Arabica trees may have grown in the Keffa region (today’s western edge of Ethiopia) and along the northwest border with the Boma plateau of South Sudan.

Not only that, the publications feature in-depth explanations of the genetics of coffee strains by stage. Important milestones include that, from the late 17th century to the mid-19th century, coffee entered an era of genetic divergence with the appearance and introduction of several varieties such as Typica, Jamaica Blue Mountain, and Laurina. The late 19th to early 20th century refers to the distribution and increase in genetic diversity of coffee. Finally, the early 20th and 21st centuries refer to the emergence of modern plant varieties and the diversification of Arabica coffee in the new era.
