Laurina
Laurina, also known as Bourbon Pointu, is a unique Arabica coffee variety originating from Réunion Island, a small French island in the Indian Ocean.
The Laurina tree is small, growing to around 2 meters tall, with a slender shape and delicate cherries that can easily fall during heavy rain, requiring careful cultivation. Its most distinctive trait is its naturally very low caffeine content, only about one-half to one-third of regular Arabica. In the cup, Laurina is elegant and delicate, offering light floral notes, sweetness of caramel and ripe fruit, gentle bright acidity, and a clean lingering finish with very little bitterness, often resembling fine tea more than traditional coffee.
Because of its low caffeine level, Laurina is also more vulnerable to pests and diseases, making it difficult to cultivate widely and resulting in low productivity.
