Misconceptions about coffee capsules

– TASTE THE ORIGIN –

Coffee capsules provide convenience in brewing. You just need to insert them directly into the coffee machine, and voila, you have a hot cup of coffee ready to drink. However, many people condemn them, claiming that these coffee capsules are responsible for worsening environmental conditions. So what is the truth? What are the misconceptions about coffee capsules? Let’s find out in this article!

Is drip coffee more environmentally friendly than coffee capsules?

Because coffee capsules are wrapped in layers of plastic or aluminum, many people believe that this waste will contribute to environmental pollution. However, the research data below proves the opposite.

In some cases, traditional Vietnamese drip coffee brewing can produce 1.5 times more emissions than coffee capsule machines. Capsules help optimize the amount of water and coffee used each time. In contrast, with Vietnamese drip coffee, users often have to use more than 20% more coffee and twice the amount of water needed.

Compared to traditional Vietnamese drip coffee, drinking coffee in capsule form (280 ml) will save 11-13 grams of coffee. Producing 11 grams of arabica coffee in Brazil emits about 59 grams of CO2e. Meanwhile, producing coffee in capsule form only emits about 27 grams of CO2e.

Therefore, using coffee capsules actually protects the environment more than Vietnamese drip coffee because the coffee production process causes more pollution and emits much more emissions.

How do coffee capsules impact the environment?

Coffee capsules have less impact on the environment than Vietnamese drip coffee does not mean they have less impact on the living environment. Although there are fewer CO2 emissions, the amount of waste they release into the environment is still a significant issue, with a volume of 576,000 tons. While many coffee capsules can be recycled, the actual amount recycled is not much. In 2017, only 11% of capsules were recycled in Brazil.

Minimizing the environmental impact of coffee capsules

Any industry, if it wants to develop sustainably, cannot separate itself from environmental issues. Because the environment is the root of general development, providing the necessary conditions for coffee trees to thrive.

To make coffee capsules truly environmentally friendly, a Swiss company has come up with a method of wrapping capsules differently. Instead of using plastic or aluminum, they use seaweed. This company guarantees that this seaweed film can completely decompose, thereby reducing the burden of waste.

Which coffee is the least harmful?

Among the types of coffee available today, which one plays the role of being environmentally friendly? That is instant coffee. Because instant coffee uses the least amount of coffee, heating water also uses less energy than traditional brewing machines.

However, when choosing instant coffee, you should choose types that have fewer added ingredients to ensure health safety. 2-in-1 or 3-in-1 instant coffees with a lot of sugar and sweeteners may contribute to obesity and diabetes.

Above, 43 Factory Coffee Roaster has provided readers with some information about coffee capsules to have a more accurate view of this convenient type of coffee. Coffee production is an industry that greatly affects the environment, so everyone needs to work together to reduce these impacts on nature and society.
