GENDER EQUALITY IN THE COFFEE INDUSTRY

OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES

The coffee industry is one of the most contemporary, open, and forward-thinking sectors. Many individuals, however, are being left behind, with women being discriminated against more than males. Equality in the coffee industry is thus always a major problem for the sector’s growth.

THE CURRENT CONTEXT OF GENDER INEQUALITY

Women perform up to 80% of the labor on coffee farms, according to research (*). They pick, sort, wash, transport, and process coffee. However, their earnings are significantly lower than those of their male colleagues.

Female growers are becoming more prevalent, although males continue to play a dominant role in specialty coffee production. This gender disparity does not just disadvantage women. It has an impact on farm output as well as household welfare.

As a result, we must ask: Are women fairly represented in the coffee industry? And are we doing initiatives to ensure gender equality in the industry?

According to studies, women are innovative, and the majority of their decisions are extremely communal. They value the common good over short-term profit or personal advantage. Women farmers in Colombia are a positive example since their regard for the environment has contributed to the development of the wild farming landscape. Aside from coffee, they produce a variety of plants. These various agricultural approaches have a significant positive impact on the surrounding ecology. As a result, the environmental effect is reduced while the impact of climate change on the coffee industry is increased.

GENDER EQUALITY – KEY TO THE SUSTAINABILITY

Addressing the disadvantages and prejudices faced by women and girls is an essential part of closing the gender equality gap. In the developing world, we see more cultures and societies adopting attitudes that respect diversity and are more inclusive. This is great and the same principles should apply in the Specialty coffee communities.

Gender equality is not only a fundamental human right but also a prerequisite for sustainable coffee industry development. We are working to leave a mark, claim and improve coffee quality globally by sharing information on directly traded varieties, processes and beans. Specialty coffee shop is also becoming more and more professional from service to advanced equipment.

At 43 Factory Coffee Roaster, our workers believe that even though they are just a grain of sand in the vast coffee universe, every positive action we take can have a huge impact.

When sourcing is ethical, we may enhance the livelihoods of many women and their families by beginning with the selection and delivery of high-quality Arabica coffee beans from the source with the objective of reducing the gender gap throughout the whole coffee supply chain. To reach women more effectively, agricultural extension and consulting services must be promoted. Give women and men equal opportunity, privileges, and responsibilities.
