Excelsa
Excelsa is a coffee variety classified as a variant of Liberica. It originates from Central Africa and is now commonly cultivated in parts of Southeast Asia, including Vietnam, the Philippines, and India. The plant is a tall, tree-like species that grows best at elevations between 1,000 and 1,300 meters. It has natural resistance to pests but requires attentive care and maintenance.
Excelsa beans are asymmetrical in shape and have a relatively low caffeine content (0.86–1.13%). However, the plant is notably resilient against threats like coffee leaf rust, nematodes, and leaf borers, although it remains somewhat vulnerable to certain fungal diseases.
In terms of flavor, Excelsa offers a distinctive profile featuring layers of tropical fruit, hazelnut, and light wood, with a subtle tannic finish that adds a mild, lingering astringency. Its gentle acidity, moderate bitterness, and medium to full body create a well-balanced and multidimensional cup.
