Coffea canephora
Coffea canephora is the scientific name of the coffee species that produces Robusta beans. Known for its high caffeine content (2–4%), this variety delivers a distinctly strong and bitter taste.
The plant can grow up to 10 meters tall, begins bearing fruit around 3 to 4 years of age, and has a lifespan of approximately 20 to 30 years. It thrives at altitudes below 1,000 meters, favoring hot, humid climates (24–29°C) with plenty of sunlight.
Originally native to the highland forests of Ethiopia, C. canephora was found growing wild across West and Central Africa and was officially recognized as a separate species in 1897. Today, it is widely cultivated in Africa, Asia, and South America.
