Espresso Italiano
Espresso Italiano is a coffee certified by the Italian National Espresso Institute (INEI) since 1998. This certification guarantees that the coffee adheres to the traditional standards of authentic Italian espresso in both flavor and brewing method.
To qualify as Espresso Italiano, the coffee must be extracted using 7 grams of finely ground coffee, under 9 bars of pressure, with water heated between 88–92°C (190–198°F), and brewed within approximately 25 seconds. This process yields a 25ml (0.85 oz) espresso shot with a well-balanced and consistent flavor profile.
Meeting the criteria of Espresso Italiano requires a precise combination of high-quality coffee beans, proper equipment, and skilled barista techniques. A well-crafted espresso features a thick, velvety crema with a caramel hue, which helps retain the coffee’s aroma and enhances its overall texture.
The signature flavor profile of Espresso Italiano is a delicate balance of mild acidity, gentle sweetness, and a smooth, lingering bitterness. Notes of cocoa, hazelnut, and caramel create a rich and authentic Italian espresso experience.
