Criollo
Criollo is a coffee variety that originates from the Arabica species, specifically from the Typica lineage, and is primarily grown in South American countries such as Ecuador, Venezuela, and Mexico.
The term “Criollo” means “native” or “local” in Spanish, reflecting the plant’s adaptation and development in its regional environments. Criollo is characterized by large bean size, balanced and sweet flavor, and mild acidity, which contribute to a high-quality cup profile.
However, this variety is highly susceptible to coffee leaf rust and pests, and generally produces lower yields compared to other Arabica cultivars. Despite these challenges, its distinctive cup quality has led to ongoing efforts to preserve and enhance the Criollo lineage within Arabica genetics.
