Capensis
Capensis is an old, confusing name because this plant species is not actually coffee. Its identifying characteristic is that this plant has been reclassified. It belongs to Tricalysia—a different genus (group) of plants, not the genus Coffea (the coffee group). Both of these groups belong to the large “family” Rubiaceae, which includes thousands of plant species.
The practical significance of this is that it provides clarity for the coffee industry. Although there are many “relatives,” only plants belonging to the Coffea genus (like Arabica, Robusta) are the true coffee that we use.
