The Kirigu factory is one of the oldest in the region and was build in the 1950’s. Being quite small in terms of members, they are very quality driven and want to work on their certifications. Also, they want to employ and agronomist in order to train their farmers. Esther Waitheka is the manager of the Gakuyu FCS.
/1/ FARM/ESTATE PROCESSING TECHNIQUES
The cherries are sorted before being pulped. The parchment is then fermented overnight, before being washed and graded into P1, P2, P3, P lights and pods. After that, it is dried on the drying tables for 8-14 days.
/2/ ENVIRONMENTAL/SUSTAINABILITY
The Gakuyu FCS own a slaughterhouse and three lorries that they rent out for transport. In future, they want to increase the volume of metal drying tables in order to handle the volume. Moreover, they own a own coffeeplot where they organize trainings and generate income for the society.
