First time cooperation: 2025
Collaboration model: Indirect trade
Gatina is a coffee processing facility established in 1968, nestled between the western slopes of Mount Kenya and the eastern slopes of the Aberdares range.
Currently receiving cherry from 790 smallholder farmers, including 280 women-owned farms. The micro-farming model of 0.1 hectares per farmer enables meticulous care of each coffee tree. Many farmers diversify their income through intercropping with tea, maize, and legumes.
At altitudes between 1,800-2,050 meters, Gatina provides ideal conditions for Batian, Ruiru 11, SL28, and SL34 varieties. Under Mugaga Farmers’ Cooperative Society’s management, Gatina stands out for its commitment to sustainable development and consistent quality. Their rigorous quality control from harvest to processing, combined with technical support programs and community development initiatives, has created a sustainable specialty coffee production model that can be replicated.
