Amatenango de la Frontera is located in Chiapas, Mexico, just steps from the Guatemalan border. Situated at 1,600m altitude in the Sierra Madre de Chiapas, with nutrient-rich volcanic soil and ideal climate.
Chiapas accounts for 40% of Mexico’s total coffee production, shares a border with Guatemala’s famous Huehuetenango region, significantly influencing the coffee’s aromatic profile. Home to many indigenous Mayan communities proud of their heritage and unique coffee varieties.
This place brings together around 100 small producers, supported by Jesús Salazar (Caféologo) to promote sustainable farming and value the work of Mayan communities
Jesús Salazar launched the “Cafeologia” project in 2010, starting with 4 farmers and now working directly with 280 micro producers. He considers himself a developer rather than a buyer, providing training and supporting improvement initiatives.
The Caféologo project embodies a philosophy of placing people and community before profit – completely aligned with XLIII Coffee’s values. Producers remain committed to classic Arabica varieties, focusing on quality over yield. Traditional farming methods not only produce excellent coffee but also protect biodiversity and Mayan culture. This is the future XLIII Coffee wants to help build.
