Does decaf coffee really contain no caffeine?

– TASTE THE ORIGIN –

Many people are passionate about the seductive flavor but are sensitive to the caffeine content hidden in each cup of pure coffee. Decaf coffee or decaffeinated coffee was born as a solution to help people with caffeine allergies enjoy the taste of coffee. But are they truly caffeine-free? Explore with 43 Factory Coffee now.

How was decaf coffee born?

Going back to the history of the coffee world, there is much evidence that there were experiments with decaf coffee in the early 1900s. At that time, German coffee merchants noticed that the caffeine content decreased significantly when Their coffee beans are soaked in seawater. However, it was not until Ludwig Roselius launched a successful decaffeination process and announced it commercially that this special type of coffee gradually became popular around the world. He conducted experiments and created decaf coffee by steaming coffee with different acids and using solvents to remove caffeine. The finished product will have extremely low caffeine content but still rich in characteristic flavors. Today, decaf coffee processing has been improved with different methods, but Ludwig’s process is considered the invention that paved the way for this new world.

With modern decaf production processes, green coffee beans are warmed and soaked in liquid to dissolve and remove caffeine using one of four methods such as using only water, using a mixture of water and solvent. (most commonly methylene chloride or ethyl acetate) or supercritical carbon dioxide. Solvents and high temperatures will separate the caffeine content from the beans. The coffee will then be washed, steamed and roasted at the appropriate temperature to evaporate all the liquid used in the decaffeination process.

Regarding the safety of decaffeinated solvents, the US Food and Drug Administration has set a strict standard to ensure that every solvent used is safe. The FDA measures this content  in “parts per million.” Therefore, after decaffeination, coffee can contain no more than 10 parts per million, which is safe for users. For example, methylene chloride – that’s one thousandth of a percent.

Amount of caffeine in a cup of decaf coffee

In most decaf coffee production processes, caffeine is pulled and filtered from the coffee beans, but not all of it. The final product will remove about 97% or more of the caffeine. For example, a regular cup of coffee has about 95 mg of caffeine. Once decaf, a cup of decaf will have about 2 mg of caffeine.

According to CNA experts, this amount of caffeine is safe to consume and can be added to a healthy diet. US health authorities also recommend that a reasonable caffeine intake for most adults is about 400mg per day or about 4-5 cups of coffee. However, everybody is different, so you should check your doctor’s health recommendations while also getting a feel for how your body reacts to caffeine.
